Hampden-Sydney

Campus Prints of Hampden-Sydney College – Hampden-Sydney, Virginia

In 1824, using bricks made from local clay and water then fired in a nearby kiln, construction of the Seminary Main Building was begun as part of the Union Theological Seminary. In 1899, Major Richard M. Venable purchased this and several other buildings in the name of Hampden-Sydney College. The Watkins Bell Tower was constructed in 1934 to replace the wooden tower that had been a landmark for many years. This brick tower is a monument to Asa Dupuy Watkins (class of 1894) Professor of English at Hampden-Sydney 1918-1932

Hampden-Sydney College is part of Edith Schermerhorn's limited edition collection of Campus Prints composed of architecturally correct pencil drawings of buildings on college, university and U.S. military academy campuses. Prints are available to purchase as a print or matted and framed and make the perfect graduation or anniversary gift.
